Atmosphere and comfort at Boerenhofstede de Overhorn

A beautifully renovated monumental farmhouse from 1886.

History

The Overhorn farmstead is located in a quiet, rural spot between the river Vecht and the meadows of the Naardermeer. It consists of a summer and a winter house, a haystack and a large stable, previously used for dairy cattle.

Owner Irene Rol says:

“We bought the farmstead in 1996 from a dairy farmer who was moving to Friesland. It was love at first sight. A farmhouse that was still original and authentic, nothing had been renovated in 50 years except for a bathroom in the stable. Everyone thought we were crazy, but we were able to see a hidden gem. We started renovating the house with much enthusiasm. Gradually, we have restored, insulated and improved the farm from head to toe and started using all the rooms and apartments”

In 2000 we started the B&B, with the rooms Vecht riverview and Swalow ‘Zwaluw’. In 2004 the apartment Hert was completed. It was initially intended for the care of our parents, but soon in use as a nice place to stay for a business guest with a multi-year assignment at the Municipality of Weesp.

In 2010 we started rebuilding the huge open haybarn. It contains two large apartments: Haystack ‘Hooiberg’, a luxury apartment with a large living room, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Suitable for 4-5 people, located on the first floor (accessible via a staircase) with a beautiful view of the Naardermeer nature reserve. On the ground floor is apartment Fox ‘Vos’, suitable for 2-3 people, with a living room, open kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a lovely terrace.

When the children flew the nest, we made the rooms on the first floor of the Winterhuis suitable for B&B. There are four smaller rooms, each with its own bathroom. They are in the former hayloft and are named Cow ‘Koe’, Hare ‘Haas’, Rooster ‘Haan’ and Owl ‘Uil’.

Renovation of the large dairy barn at the back started in 2013. In addition to a hobby room and training location ‘Echt aan de Vecht’, two 2-person apartments have also been realised with the name  Scheep and Horse. Sheep has the bedroom on the first floor and Horse is located entirely on the ground floor, has access to a spacious sitting area and contains a nice bath. The barn is equipped with 78 solar panels and the basement is used to collect rainwater.

In the main house, consisting of the summer and winter house, all old elements have been preserved. You can clearly see the high-quality construction of 1886, with original wooden beams, arched trusses and beautiful wooden shutters. What you don’t see, but what has been restored to its former glory, are the original wells under the house with a supply of water from the Vecht. These are now used to collect water and for the heat pump.

Atmosphere and comfort

Decorating spaces is one of my passions. Everything is tastefully decorated for a nice, comfortable stay, with attention to detail and colour schemes. Each room has a private bathroom and is equipped with modern comforts like a flat-screen TV with cable channels and WIFI.

The rooms and apartments are decorated in a country style. The apartments all have a kitchen with refrigerator and cooking facilities. The rooms have access to the bed and breakfast kitchen to make coffee and tea.

We offer free and safe onsite parking (22 spaces) and there’s a charging station for electric cars. You are very welcome to enjoy the outdoors on all terraces and seating areas in the huge garden.

Personal attention

We aim to make our guests happy and pamper them. Are you looking for a personal approach and real dedication? You’ll find it at the Overhorn. We speak English, French, German and Dutch. We thoroughly enjoy the nice conversations with and between the -international- guests at the breakfast table. Authenticity and genuineness are appreciated, our employees do it from their hearts. More and more guests are consciously opting for the experience, tranquility, and personal attention in a homely atmosphere.

For whom?

We are conscious of our heritage in the middle of nature. This is reflected in choosing sustainable energy, water and energy savings through solar panels, heat pumps, and rainwater collection. But also through the use of eco-cleaning products, natural building materials, fabrics and the use of local products. The rooms and apartments are checked by us every day. Hygiene scores a 9.3 on 428 reviews of booking. Everything is neat and clean, which gives pleasure and peace. It is wonderful to walk or sit in the chairs or deck chairs of the natural -green- garden, wich has monumental trees, forest path, native plants, beehives and flowers for bees and butterflies. Because of the wooden buildings, thatched roof and to prevent nuisance, we are a completely non-smoking location and BBQing is also not possible.

We are the perfect place for the guest who can enjoy nature and wants to wake up to bird and frog sounds. Honesty comes first with us, so we don’t want to raise expectations that we can’t live up to. The railway line passes behind our plot. When there’s a northeast wind you can hear the train. Fortunately, you get used to that sound quickly and it is very quiet on this route in the evening and at night. Also, our house is mainly made of wood, it can creak and we ask guests to be considerate of the neighbors between 22:00 and 08:00 (contact noises). The Boerenhofstede is ‘adults-only’. Partying and inviting groups of friends do not match our relaxed environment.

Will you come and enjoy the beauty in and around the Overhorn? We are ideal for the whistling cyclist (long distance or cycle route network), enthusiastic walker (Migration bird path, walk around Naardermeer or FlorisV-path) and especially for the guest who is looking for peace and quiet in nature. The Overhorn is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle and stress of everyday life. Of course also for tourists who want to visit Amsterdam. But don’t forget picturesque Weesp, it’s a town at the Vecht with cosy restaurants and shops.

Long stay?

Our apartments are regularly used for a (mid) long-stay, for bridging a period between selling and buying houses, interim jobs in Amsterdam and the surrounding area, but also for those who are looking for some peace and quiet to reflect, write a book or work on a piece of music.
